Whether or not to do a first look prior to your wedding.

Should You Do a First Look?

How do you know if a first look or pre-wedding photo session is right for you? Here are some pros and cons of doing a pre-wedding photo session, to help you decide if it is the right choice for you!

It Can Mean More Time for Photos!

Pro: If you and your partner get ready early, you can go to wedding locations that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to fit in between your ceremony and reception. This could mean making it to a location that has a lot of meaning to you!

Con: You will have to start your day earlier if you do want locations further away, or more time for wedding photos in general.

Pro: You won’t have to entertain guests between your wedding ceremony and reception if you’ve gotten most of your family photos done ahead of time, all that will be left is family photos. You will also be able to mingle with guests during this time before the reception begins.

Con: It can take away from that “special moment” at the ceremony. The first time you see each other will be special either way, but if it is important to you for that moment to be shared with your friends and family then a first look will take away from that.

The Relaxed Environment Could Mean More Emotion

Pro: A good photographer will use the proper camera equipment to ensure they aren’t too close during your first look. This means the first time you see each other no one will be able to hear what you say, and the moment is entirely your own.

Con: If sharing the moment with friends and family would make it a more memorable or emotional experience, then this might not be the right choice for you.

Pro: If either of you dislike being emotional in front of other people, this might be the perfect way to relax and let the emotions flow!  If you’re feeling nervous about your ceremony this may help you feel more relaxed.

Ultimately There is No “Right” Answer

The decision is only yours to make, and what you think fits your day best. This is also a conversation you should have with your photographer if you’re on the fence, as they may be able to offer suggestions based off of what you tell them is most important to you. Their experience will allow them to understand your needs and give you different perspectives you haven’t even thought of!
